MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, US — Cargill, one of Russia’s largest agribusiness investors, said in a March 11 statement that it will scale back its business activities and discontinue investments while continuing to operate its food and feed facilities in response to Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. China official says wheat crop may be ‘worst in history’

BEIJING, CHINA – A Chinese agricultural official said on March 5 that this year’s China winter wheat crop could be the “worst in history,” Reuters reported.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs Tang Renjian told reporters at the country’s annual parliament meeting that a survey taken of the crop prior to the start of winter showed a 20% reduction in first- and second-grade winter wheat, due mainly to heavy rainfall during planting that reduced acreage by one-third.

BEIJING, CHINA — China’s customs agency on Feb. 24 approved imports of wheat from all regions of Russia, the Associated Press reported.

This move gives Russian President Vladmir Putin an alternative to Western markets that might be closed under sanctions.
