U.S. soft red winter wheat crop seen down 16%

NAPLES, FLORIDA, U.S.. — A survey of millers at division meetings of the North American Millers’ Association meeting in Naples, Florida, U.S., on March 17 forecast 2015 soft red winter wheat production down 16% from 2014 but soft white winter wheat production up 6%.

Soft wheat millers forecast U.S. 2015 soft red winter wheat production at 380,869,000 bushels, down 16% from 455,297,000 bushels in 2014 and compared with five-year average production of 421,690,800 bushels. If realized, 2015 production would be the lowest since 219,209,000 bushels in 2010. Outturn was forecast down in all principal regions with Central states and Midwest each down 18%, mid-Atlantic down 3%, Southeast down 8% and Delta/Southwest down 23%.

The millers also forecast 2015 soft white winter wheat production at 182,472,000 bushels, up 6% from 2014 outturn of 172,802,000 bushels (which was the lowest outturn since 2007) and compared with five-year average production of 210,817,600 bushels. Soft white winter wheat production included 172,424,000 bushels to be harvested in the Pacific Northwest, up 9% from 2014, and 9,315,000 bushels to be harvested in Michigan, down 16%.
