“The purpose of this course is to supply grain-management information that is not available elsewhere to help grain managers properly understand how to avoid errors and become more efficient,” said Carl Reed, IGP Institute grain storage specialist. “Much of that information was developed through scientific investigation and we invite guest speakers to teach the non-science subjects such as personnel management and grain-handling equipment.”
The course will cover topics including personnel management, grain quality assessment, handling equipment, drying, operation costs, inventory management, receiving and shipping, condition monitoring, aeration principles, aeration strategies and fumigation.
A participant from the January Grain Elevator Managers course, Tony Martens, said there are many misperceptions in the industry on how to complete tasks, and he learned a lot of information by getting different perspectives from the instructor and classmates. Martens is a manager at the United Farmers Co-op.
“I now have a better understanding of the way grain works in the bin and how air moves moisture through it,” Martens said. “By coming here, my supervisors will get another perspective and it will help them like it has helped me.”
