Grain, biofuel shipments surge at Canadian port

PRINCE RUPERT, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — Volumes reached record heights in 2014 at more than half of the Port of Prince Rupert’s cargo terminals, according to year-end statistics released on Jan. 9 by the Prince Rupert Port Authority.

WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — More than 25 U.S. food and agriculture companies and associations have formed a coalition that seeks to end the U.S. embargo on Cuba and advance trade relations between the nations.

Cargill’s net earnings up 41%

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, U.S. — Cargill reported on Jan. 8 net earnings of $784 million in the fiscal 2015 second quarter ended Nov. 30, up 41% from $556 million in the year-ago period.

First-half earnings were $1.21 billion, a 7% increase from $1.13 billion a year ago. Second-quarter revenues decreased 8% to $30.3 billion, which brought first-half revenues to $63.6 billion.

Study links whole grains to reduced risk of death

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, U.S. — Eating whole grains may decrease the risk of overall mortality by up to 9%, according to a study from the Harvard School of Public Health that involved more than 118,000 people. Risk of death from cardiovascular disease dropped even further, by up to 15%. Results of the study appeared on-line Jan. 5 in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Brazilian port sets new record in grain exports

PARANAGUA, BRAZIL — The Port of Paranagua on Dec. 30 reported its best December in the history of the complex.

In the first 30 days of December, the complex has exported more than 982,700 tonnes of grain, a 31% increase from the previous record of 749,000 tonnes set in December 2012. The total is 47.5% higher than the 665,800 tonnes reported last year.
