KYIV, UKRAINE — Canada will help Ukraine export some 25 million tonnes of grain that has been stranded due to the Russian invasion, The Market Herald reported.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will help Ukraine find options to move the grain to other countries around the world. That could help with rising food prices as well as countries who rely on Ukrainian imports.
Since the Russian invasion in mid-February, Ukraine has exported grain via train over its western border. It also is looking to use a port on the Danube River.
Trudeau did not give specifics on how Canada will help, but he noted that shipping via the Danube was one of several options.
Canada is giving $25 million to the United Nations’ World Food Programme and also is removing tariffs on all Ukrainian imports to Canada for the next year.
