Rice mill and tourism businesses are outstanding, bright businesses for Thai investors in Cambodia now, said Jiranun Wongmongkol, Minister Counsellor (Commercial) at the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh.
Thai investors looking for investment in Cambodia should consider in investing in these two business sectors, said Ms Jiranun.
Cambodia’s capacity in milling rice is only 300,000 tonnes, but its government wants to export more rice.
The Khmer government has targeted exporting one million tonnes of rice in 2015.
Tourism is another bright business sector in Cambodia which investors ought to consider, she said, but cautioned that investors should study Cambodian laws carefully before making a commitment.
Many Thai investors in Cambodia may have to close their businesses as they will face rising costs as the Cambodian government will increase monthly labour wages by almost double from the current US$128 dollars to US$250 dollars in 2017.
Cambodia is currently the second major importer of Thai goods.
However, some problems persist. Several Thai products popular have been counterfeited, making Cambodians misunderstand that they are manufactured in Thailand.
