U.S. Claims Homeless From Haiti Quake Far Less

News Americas, WASHINGTON, D.C., Weds. June 1, 2011: Less than one million people moved into tent cities after the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti and not the 1.5 million originally estimated.

That’s according to a leaked new United States government report. The report, not yet made public, suggests the number was more 895,000 than the 1.5 million estimated by the International Organization for Migration, an intergovernmental organization.

And the U.S.A.I.D., which hired a Washington research group to prepare the report, also claimed that at most 375,000 people remain in tent cities, far less than the migration organization’s count of more than 600,000.

The International Organization for Migration, however, says it stands by its numbers.

But perhaps most controversial was the USAID’s claim that 46,000 to 85,000 people died in the quake, a far cry from the 230,000 the Haitian government said had died.
