Grain market review: Wheat

With harvest approaching in Northern Hemisphere growing regions and crop estimates being revised up as weather remains largely favorable, wheat has become cheaper recently.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said in its June 10 Grain: World Markets and Trade report that “wheat prices fell across most major exporting countries since last month’s WASDE (the USDA’s monthly World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report) with improving winter wheat conditions in several key producing regions.”

Expected large harvest buoys French wheat export estimate

PARIS, FRANCE — France’s soft wheat production is anticipated to bounce back leading to a rise in exports and stocks of the commodity, Reuters reported citing FranceAgriMer.

Soft wheat exports to destinations outside of the EU are forecast to jump 40% to 10.5 million tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year while exports within the EU are expected to total 7.3 million tonnes, a 22% increase compared to the previous year.

China wheat output up from 2020

BEIJING, CHINA — More than 134 million tonnes of wheat have been harvested in China in 2021, a 2% increase from last year’s output, according to the National Statistics Bureau (NSB).

The rise in production is due to increased planted area and yield, the NSB said. It noted that wheat acreage and yield rose 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively.
