GrainCorp expects earnings to drop

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA — GrainCorp said on Feb. 27 that it expects its earnings for 2015 to fall to a five-year low due to drought on the east coast of Australia that has curbed grain production.

The company said it expected earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization of A$240 million to A$270 million ($187 million to $211 million) for the year that ends in June, as much as 18% below last year’s A$293 million.

IGC: World grain production to reach new record

LONDON, ENGLAND — The forecast for total world grains production in 2014-15 increased 4 million tonnes to a record 2.006 billion tonnes in the latest International Grains Council (IGC) report released on Feb. 26.

Cargill’s Mexican facility to produce aquaculture feed

TEHUACAN, PUEBLA, MEXICO — As part of the celebrations for its 150th global anniversary and 50 years of operations in Mexico, Cargill Mexico inaugurated the expansion of its animal feed facility on Feb. 24.

Buhler names new leader for Grain Technology Center

UZWIL, SWITZERLAND — Bühler announced in February that Rudolf Hofer has taken over management of its Grain Technology Center (GTC) in Uzwil, Switzerland.

He is in charge of the seven-person team at the center, focused on the development and testing of industrial processes for grains and pulses. Hofer took over from Uwe Schill at the beginning of 2015.

With the hiring of Hofer, this is the first time the facility will not be managed by a head miller.

China continues to import rice at a record pace

WASHINGTON, D.C., U.S. — Rice imports by China are expected to set a new record in 2015, surpassing 2014 levels by 200,000 tonnes and marking the fourth consecutive year of record imports, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service said on Feb. 23.

CBH to add solar generators to grain facilities

WEST PERTH, AUSTRALIA — The CBH Group said on Feb. 24 that it has entered into a supply contract with Perth, Australia, clean energy company EMC to engineer, procure and construct three large solar power generators at their grain handling and workshop facilities at Bibra Lake, Geraldton and Forrestfield.

PIETERMARITZBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — Driven by an increase in demand from customers throughout the region for animal feed products, Cargill said on Feb. 23 that it has completed a $12.5 million expansion of its premix facility in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa.

CFIA confirms BSE case related to feed

OTTAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA — A confirmed case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is feed-related, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) reported on Feb. 20. But the affected cow was born in March 2009 — almost two years after Canada implemented an enhanced feed ban to block the spread of the disease.
