19th Annual General Meeting

The Caribbean Millers’ Association (CMA) hosted its 19th Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 1-2, 2015 at the Sunset Beach Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica under the theme “Synergies in Flour & Feed Milling”.

The Meeting began with an Opening Session whereby the Minister of State in the Ministry of Industry Investment & Commerce, the Honourable Sharon Ffolkes-Abrahams brought greetings to the over 60 delegates in attendance. Major crop losses in Central America due to El Niño

ROME, ITALY — Prolonged dry weather associated with the El Niño phenomenon has severely reduced this year’s cereal outputs in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, putting a large numbers of farmers in need of agricultural assistance as the subregion tries to recover amidst ongoing dryness, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) said on Sept. 14.

Russia affected by wheat export tax

U.S. Crop maturity slows with cooler weather

CHESTERFIELD, MISSOURI, U.S. — Corn acres doughing surpassed the five-year average last week while corn denting met it, according to a report released today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. With 92% of corn acres in the doughing stage, 60% denting and 9% mature, the overall corn crop condition held strong with 68% of acres now rated in good or excellent condition.

Ardent Mills finalizes deal to acquire Mondelēz facility

DENVER, COLORADO, U.S. — Having announced its intent on Aug. 20, Ardent Mills, a flour-milling and ingredient company, said on Sept. 1 that it has finalized the deal to purchase the Mondelēz Canada flour mill located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. The mill produces hard and soft wheat flour for its Canadian bakeries and a number of food manufacturing customers. The details of the transaction were not disclosed.

Cargill completes expansion at premix plant

MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, U.S. — Cargill announced on Aug. 13 that it has completed a $5 million plant expansion at its El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico location.

The plant, which originally opened in 2004, will now triple in capacity to produce more than 9,000 tonnes of premix per month, and employ 85 people. It will produce premix for all species, including aquaculture, with an emphasis on poultry and swine, and will serve markets in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.

CWB lifts crop hopes after tour

MANITOBA, CANADA — Drought has badly damaged canola and wheat crops on Canada’s prairies, but not as negatively as expected, despite its crop tour foreseeing the lowest wheat yields in eight years, said Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) on July 23.

CWB pegged the wheat harvest in Canada’s prairies at 23.1million tonnes, well below the production of 27.2 million tonnes the region achieved last year according to official data.
